Teacher's Resources

The TPRI is designed to help teachers gather information about students’ needs and abilities in reading.  A number of resources have been created to help teachers administer the TPRI and use TPRI data to inform their instruction:

Administering TPRI

It is important that the TPRI assessment be administered consistently and accurately. To help ensure reliable administration the following resources have been developed:

Teacher's Guide

The TPRI Teacher’s Guide provides detailed instructions and samples for administering the TPRI accurately and reliably, along with guidance for using TPRI results to inform instruction. Review selections from the Teacher's Guide using the links below.

QRSQuick Review Sheets

Quick Review Sheets have been created for each grade level to assist the teacher during administration.  It is recommended that teachers fold their Quick Review Sheet in half and place it in the Teacher’s Guide for reference as needed. To download the Quick Review Sheet for your grade-level, please click here.

Administration Videos2010 TPRI Administration Videos

Training videos have been created for each grade level so that teachers can view proper administration of each TPRI screening and inventory task. Please click here to view administration videos for each grade-level.

Analyzing Data

Once all students in the class have been administered TPRI, teachers will need to analyze data gathered to identify specific needs of students.

Automated Class Summary Sheets

ACSSTo support teachers in analyzing TPRI scores, teachers may wish to use the K-3 TPRI Automated Class Summary Sheets. Once data for each student has been entered into the spreadsheet, teachers can view totals and percentages of class scores for each task, and also view equated fluency scores. Data is also presented on helpful graphs. To download the Automated Class Summary Sheet specific to your grade level, please click here.

Alternate Kindergarten Class Summary Sheet

Alternate Kindergarten Class Summary SheetAn alternative Kindergarten Class Summary Sheet is available for teachers using the Kindergarten Grouping Tool.  This version of the Summary Sheet includes a column for teachers to record the total number of letters and sounds correctly identified by the student.  Click here to download the alternate version of the Kindergarten Class Summary Sheet.

Fluency Equating Tables

ACSSTPRI provides tools to help teachers measure and understand fluency scores more effectively.  These tools come in the form of Fluency Equating Tables which equate fluency performance on any story with the hardest End-of-Year story (Story 6).

Equated scores help to show difficulties that might be missed by looking just at actual scores. Please click here to view the Fluency Equating Tables.

Sample Tier 2 Criteria

Tier 2TPRI has received many requests to provide sample tiering criteria.  The sample provided here has been created to support districts and schools in making their own tiering criteria. Tiering criteria should be made by considering the specific needs of the population of students being served. Careful analysis of the data will help in setting criteria. Please click here to view the Sample Tier 2 Criteria.

Expanded Sample TPRI Criteria

Tier 2TPRI often receives questions from teachers about how students should score on TPRI at different time points. TPRI is pleased to share a tool that helps teachers know what is reasonable to expect of students at BOY, MOY and EOY. This tool can also be used to help teachers, schools and districts set criteria for identifying students who may require intervention.  Please click here to view the Expanded Sample TPRI Criteria.

Campus Data Grid

Tier 2The Campus Data Grid is a resource to help schools analyze TPRI scores from multiple classrooms and grades.  As data for each class or grade level is entered, teachers and administrators will see the percentage of students who scored Still Developing on each TPRI task.  The Campus Data Grid will help schools identify strengths and weaknesses of their instructional programs, and will assist them as they allocate intervention resources and establish plans for providing intervention instruction. Please click here to download the Campus Data Grid.  Before entering any data, be sure to save the file to your computer.

Grouping for Instruction

Grouping ToolsGrouping Tools

Grouping Tools have been designed to help teachers make sense of student scores and to assist teachers in forming instructional groups. Teachers will refer to the information collected on the Class Summary Sheet when using these tools.

Grouping ToolGrouping Mats

The Grouping Mat is another tool used by teachers to effectively group students for instruction. A Grouping Mat is provided for each grade-level.

Instructional Planning Resources

Once small groups have been established by using the Grouping Tool or a Grouping Mat, teachers will need to plan for targeted instruction. TPRI has developed a number of resources to support the teacher in planning effective, targeted instruction.

The Instructional Planning Resources include the Guide for Reading Instruction, a range of Lesson Planning Tools for use with different grades and skills, the Interventions Activities Guide (IAG) and IAG Blackline Masters.

Guide for Reading Instruction

ToolThis tool facilitates lesson planning in different areas. It helps with selecting and recording a specific instructional focus, and with identifying instructional activities.  Space for planning for multiple groups, or one group for multiple days or weeks is provided.

The Intervention Activities Guide (IAG) is designed to enhance small group instruction to meet students’ various academic needs. The IAG consists primarily of intervention activities that help students develop reading concepts assessed by the TPRI. Please click here to read more about the Intervention Activities Guide (IAG).

IAG Blackline MastersBlackline

To help teachers with preparation of many of the activities included in the Intervention Activities Guide, over 100 Blackline Masters have been created for easy download. Please click here to access the IAG Blackline Masters.

Communicating with Parents

Parent LettersParent LettersTo assist teachers in communicating with parents, TPRI has created sample letters for teachers to download and personalize.  The purpose of the letter is to inform parents about the TPRI and report results. Teachers are encouraged to revise these letters to meet their needs. The sample letters are specific to each grade level and time-point (BOY, MOY, EOY).
